New Years Resolution Five: Help Local Economies
One of the big research focus areas this year centered on how organic farms impact the economy as a whole, and farmer liveliehoods in specific. One study found that organic hot spots – counties with high levels of organic agricultural activity whose neighboring counties also have high organic activity–positively impact local economies. Another showed that organic farming not only creates more job opportunities but also more secure (longer-term) employment opportunities. Some studies even looked outside of the U.S., showing that organic farming contributes to higher incomes for farmers in other parts of the world as well.
