New Years Resolution Seven: Stay Down to Earth

Choosing organic is still the best way to support healthy soils, and the organic food that you eat has a direct impact on the earth it was grown in. This year a long-term study found that organic agriculture improves physical characteristics of soil compared to conventional farming. Specifically, researchers found that organic plots had the ability to store significantly more water than conventional systems and that soil aggregates (clumps of soil particles) were larger and more stable in the organic plots.  The organic soils were also less susceptible to compaction than conventional soils. Another study showed that organic farming is linked to greater soil health and higher levels of micronutrients than conventional farming. Lots of good news for the soil this year!
