Comments to the Western Growers Association on E. coli O157 GAP Metrics
March 2007
Author(s): Dr. Charles Benbrook
"Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) Metrics" to prevent future E. coli O157 outbreaks have been under development by the Western Growers Association (WGA) since the fall, 2006.
The Organic Center has commented previously on earlier drafts of the GAP Metrics, and appreciates the willingness of WGA to strengthen the water testing and soil amendment provisions in the Metrics.
Important changes recommended by the Center have been made in the Salmonella and E. coli O157 acceptance criteria for composts. Further technical refinements in those acceptance criteria are recommended in this March 2007 set of comments to the WGA.
