Threats of Antibiotic Resistant Diseases
A new report by the CDC details the threats of antibiotic resistant diseases on the public. One of the factors contributing to antibiotic resistance is the broad application of low doses of antibiotics in rearing animals. This practice can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, which can eventually make their way into humans through physical exposure and even dietary exposure. In their report, the CDC state “the use of antibiotics for promoting growth is not necessary, and the practice should be phased out.” They also state that “according to data published by FDA, there are more kilograms of antibiotics sold in the United States for foodproducing animals than for people. This use contributes to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food-producing animals. Resistant bacteria in foodproducing animals are of particular concern because these animals serve as carriers.” Make sure to choose organic dairy and meat to avoid contributing to (and potentially exposure to) antibiotic resistant diseases!
