Why did the government recommend that Americans double their average daily intakes of fruits and vegetables in the last update of the national dietary guidelines?
One major reason is to increase antioxidant intakes. Given today's food consumption patterns, most people get less than one-half the amount of antioxidants needed per day to optimally promote health.
