The NAS/NRC released the report Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century on June 29, 2010. The 570-page report provides a wide-ranging critique of the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary conventional, sustainable, and organic production systems and calls for a combination of incremental and transformative change.

The new report's recommendations echo those in the 1989 NAS/NRC report Alternative Agriculture.

An assessment of the differences and similarities between the two reports is offered in the July 2010 "Critical Issue Report" "What Does Sustainable Agriculture Have to Offer? Conclusions and Recommendations in Two NAS/NRC Reports".

For an historical assessment of the impact and response to Alternative Agriculture, see the analysis published by the Organic Farming Research Foundation in its Fall 2008 (Number 16) newsletter.
