In his chilling March 7, 2010 piece "The Spread of Superbugs" in the New York Times, N.D. Kristof highlighted the serious new threats to human health from bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics, and in some cases, ALL antibiotics. He noted the role of heavy agricultural use of antibiotics in triggering the emergence of resistant phenotypes of common bacteria on livestock farms. In the 2002 report "Hogging It," the Union of Concerned Scientists reported that seven pounds of antibiotics were used on livestock farms for ever pound used to threat a human infection.
